Koh Chang Information

Koh Chang (เกาะช้าง) is Thailands second largest Island behind Phuket and is situated along the east coast about 3.5 hours from Bangkok. Koh Chang is the biggest island in the group of islands known as Koh Chang national park. With about 5000 permanent residents. Koh Chang has an area of approximately 429 square kilometres.

Koh Chang was named for the elephant shape to the island, although elephants are not indigenous to the island. Seventy percent of this undisturbed island is rainforest, steep hills, cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife, fine beaches, coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. The island also offers tall mountains and rock cliffs. The tallest mountain on Koh Chang is Salakpetch.

Koh Chang is one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands with long white sandy beaches, most of them half deserted. The island is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including a selection of birds, snakes, deer and a number of elephants. The island and its surrounding areas are great places for snorkeling, diving and jungle hiking. The island has been a tourist destination since 2000 which has brought on a large amount of rapid development, however Koh Chang is still far quieter than places like Phuket or Koh Samui.

Koh Chang History

Prior to World War two, Koh Chang was an island undiscovered and known only by the locals. During this period, the few families there made a living farming and growing coconuts and fruit on the mainland. In early 1941, during the Japanese occupation, the Thai Navy fought the French in a battle in the waters to the south-east of Koh Chang.

Very little else happened to Koh Chang until the first backpackers started arriving on the back of local fishing boats in the mid to late 1970s. In 1982, Koh Chang along with its surrounding areas became part of the protected Mu Chang Marine. This is one of the reasons Koh Chang still maintains its beauty and untouched feeling. Only very recently, during the last 15 years, Koh Chang has turned itself into a major tourist destination, both for foreigners and local Thais. Many workers from the capital Bangkok come here for long weekends.
